Today is my friend Ryan's birthday. I made Ryan a card featuring one of his current obsessions, Latarian Milton. Latarian is the world infamous (YouTube sensation) seven year old Floridian who stole his grandmama's SUV so he could do hoodrat stuff like joyride, crash into parked cars and run over mailboxes. I mean, what's wrong with that? Latarian also gave his grandmama a beat down after she refused to buy him chicken wings at a local Wal-Mart. She probably deserved it. Clearly, someone has issues, and I don't mean Latarian. Happy Birthday Ryan!
I fell in love with this spread on Chateau Marmont featured in Vogue Living Australia. I've been to the Chateau many times, but just the art direction on this photo shoot made it look different in such a relaxing way. Enjoy!
Look, I love me some Francois-Xavier Lalanne, but this bed is for the birds. Not to mention there is some sort of Jersey Shore duck phone on the side table next to it and a creepy Harlequin painting in the background. This is some Twilight Zone mess and frankly I want to peck my own eyes out. All that comes to mind is Verruca Salt saying, "Daddy, I want a golden goose!" over and over again. Thanks to Maison21 for bringing this mess to my attention.
Angelenos know about the traveling food truck. We follow them on Twitter if we are lucky enough to catch them during the work week we are guaranteed something yummy. This Saturday, T Lofts will be hosting 21 local food trucks to park it on their grounds and they will be donating a portion of the proceeds to The Red Cross: Haiti Relief Efforts. If you are in the area, stop by and grab a bite to eat and walk away knowing it will benefit a country in need.
Hubby has been working hard on art for a new no-frills bar opening on Melrose later this week. Our friend Franck and his lovely fiancee Brenda gave us a call a couple of weeks ago saying they needed some urban flavor for their new restaurant featuring low prices, quality food and a plethora of drinks. They plan to have 28 beers on tap, and all will be priced at $6 including tax. Not to mention the yummy menu doesn't go over $10.
So hubby has been in the studio, working his little fingers to the bone. Melgard, located on Melrose and Gardner in the space of the old Louise's Trattoria, is currently open and operating without a liquor license, but that should be in order within the week.
Even the bathrooms have a little something for the eyes. While I continue to try to persuade Franck to change the name from "Melgard" to "Gargamel's", stop in for a bite to eat and support our friend's spot. I guarantee you'll enjoy it! Bobby Gorgeous is an ascot wearing 5 year old Pomeranian who knows how to work it. I have no clue who this fluffy fashion plate is but I like it. I like it a lot. Bobby Gorgeous cross dresses, but that is okay because he is that cute. He is also a surfer who does magic tricks. And frankly, any dog named Bobby Gorgeous can roll with me. Thank you Michael K for introducing me to Bobby Gorgeous, my life is now complete.
If you ever find yourself in St. Pete Beach, Florida, stop by the newly opened Postcard Inn and take a mental trip back in time to a 1950's surfer cool travelodge. Travel & Leisure featured the cheery spot this month and after seeing the energetic interiors, I had to learn more. Photo above borrowed from here.
The Colonial architecture hosts 195 guest rooms that feature vintage lamps, surf photos, and old school desks and couches, modernized with WiFi and flat screen tvs. Plus it features the critically acclaimed Wildwood BBQ and PCI Beach Bar & Snack Shack. Cold beer and juicy burgers served up poolside, it doesn't get better than that! Photo by Charles Gandee.
I would post more, but honestly PCI has such a nice website and blog that I would rather direct you to the source itself. Check out some of their colorful photos while working up the daydreams of a winter vacation getaway, HERE.
The cover of Architectural Record this month pays homage to the amazing Steven Holl designed Hybrid towers in Beijing. The mixed-use development operates sustainably and engages the city around it. Containing street bridges, a green roof, a grass covered perimeter and some killer views among many others, this high rise has yards of style and brightly lights up the landscape. Photo by Iwan Baan.
Japan has the fastest growing elderly population, so in an effort to address this demographic, they created the Paro Therapeutic Stuffed Animal Robot. The robot seal moves it's head and legs and recognizes its name. Great, but why is this therapeutic?
Will Paro listen to my problems and tell me to write down the reasons why I don't feel good enough? Will Paro tell me to look in the mirror and tell me to say five valueable things about myself? Will the Paro meet me for coffee in the morning when I am feeling week, or hold my hair when I have had too much to drink? WTF? I hate you PARO! You're never there for me!
I used Saturday to run all of my random errands that I will never get to once the quarter starts kicking my ass, and in the meantime I ran into some random celebrities as well. First up, from my hair appointment at Prive en route to dropping off an old cable box, I drive down Melrose and out of the corner of my eye I notice Will.i.am and passenger peeking into my car. I've met Will before, he's an old friend of the hubs, and I was tempted to roll down my window and say hello. But then I took into account the time and place and that fact that he probably wouldn't remember me and I figured it was a bad idea. I would have yelled out, "Yeah, I'm married to Joe Joe, he just designed your upcoming album cover!" but again, rolling down your window to yell out to a famous musician on Melrose in the middle of the day who may or may not remember meeting you screams desperate. So there was that.
After dropping off the cable box, I decided to grab lunch at my favorite Chinese Chicken Salad sans oranges at California Chicken Cafe before I stopped to pick up my dry cleaning. In line behind me was a gaggle of gays fresh out of the gym and with them was Puck from Glee, or so I thought. At a recent Christmas party, we had a discussion on the sexuality of Fin and Puck and the verdict was gay, so I thought I was on to something. Alas, Puck was only in line behind the gays, he was dining alone. No scoop I guess. Photo by Charley Gallay.
The Villandry Restaurant serves Frenchish food complete with a deli and barrista bar. It is one of the up and coming hot spots in the neighborhood of Fitzrovia, just outside of London. I love the way they have displayed vintage utensils over the dining booths!
I celebrated my birthday last night at CUT by Wolfie Puck and dined in the presence of George Clooney, Barack Obama and Spencer and Heidi. Photographer Martin Schoeller, once an assistant to Annie Leibovitz, is the artist exhibited at the posh eatery. His portraiture is strongly visual and stunning. Brody was on the back of my menu.
I am usually more drawn to paintings over photography, but his work is just so powerful.
To learn more about Martin Schoeller, check out his website, HERE. Martin, I am ready for my close up!
