If you're anything like me, life hasn't been easy lately. For the past year or so, I have been depressed and saddened by personal issues that have felt out of my control, often saying to myself that "things couldn't get much worse". Well, I have unfortunately found out that things can get much worse, things have gotten much worse, and yet when I think of the suffering going on in the world today, I feel completely selfish for thinking that my problems even matter.

I found out yesterday that a friend of mine suffered a stroke in front of her young children when getting them ready to go to school last week. The stroke sent her into a coma-like state and she has been diagnosed with Locked-in Syndrome, a condition that occurs when there is a blockage in the arteries flowing to the lower brain-stems. This rare form of quadriplegia effects all the functions of the nervous system and the 10% that live through it usually retain the ability to think and observe as they normally did but are left with only the ability to move their eyes up and down. There have been no cases of recovery from Locked-in Syndrome.

I met Nicole through my best friend several years ago and she was such a vibrant and lively person. She's a great daughter, wife and mother and I don't even have the words to express how horrible I feel for her and her family. We are all thinking of Nicole and her family and praying for the best.

Songstress Etta James passed away today due to complications from her battle with leukemia. The music she leaves behind will serve as a reminder of her legendary talent. I was especially sad to hear this as my husband and I had our first dance to "At Last" at our wedding. Travel well Etta.

I know I am a bit late to the party, but I am just now watching Tron Legacy on my new flat screen. I was way too little to remember the original Tron movie, but I do remember my parents took me to see the Tron Ice Capades, yes, that existed. Weird, right? And then we have all seen this horrific Halloween costume of the past.

So I was just flipping channels and I caught this at the beginning in HD and I left it on. I have no idea what is the plot or anything, but I do know this soundtrack (Daft Punk) is fucking amazing on my surround sound. Oh, and these futuristic Baroque interiors are major sexy!

If living rooms of the future look like this, count me in.

Nothing like a little mood lighting and a glass Neoclassical dining set. The chandelier is also effing gorgeous.

Cool Prints on One King's Lane

The One King's Lane sale by Saatchi Online had some very catchy prints for sale today at very reasonable prices. The Horse of Picador by L Verkler is probably my favorite.

I also thought this print of An Other Love Story by Cecilia Westerberg was kind of romantic.

And I had to include this print of Antares and Love #2, not because it necessarily appeals to me, but because it is by an artist named Joe Webb. My hubby is Joshua Webb, known as JoeX2 in the art world and Joe Joe Webb to those who love him. I wonder if this Joe Webb is a distant relative? Apparently talent runs in the family.

Venice First Fridays

I took my birthday celebration to Venice, CA on Friday to meet up with some old friend's and enjoy some of the local fare from the traveling food trucks we have come to love in town. On the first Friday of every month Abbot Kinney stays open late and draws crowds of all ages to enjoy the fresh air and take in some of the tasty bites offered up on every corner.

Yassy organized our outing, and Neha and Mirabelle are always up for a night out. I love my girls, and I am so glad they dragged me out of the house, thanks!

I was excited to link up with my old friend Cesario "Block" Montano, who will quickly tell you that he raised me. He is a character like none other, and has the best stories of anyone I know.

There were so many people and the lines to get in places were pretty long. But when you're strolling with the unofficial Mayor of Venice, anything can happen. We started the night out at Hal's, then made it over to a party that was making this weird carrot and lemon juice, so we left there and headed for the The Brigg.

There were so many food trucks, and literally all the best ones you always crave when you're driving by but don't have time to stop. I got a shrimp taco that nearly burnt my mouth off, but it was good nonetheless. And I eyed a ton of stores I would love to go spend some money in, but know that I shouldn't!

Did I mention my new drinking buddy is Oliver Stone? Like I said, when hanging out with Block, anything can happen. Block had spotted Oliver eating at Hal's, and after a few drinks he had no problem telling Fred (above) to go with him over to his table and make friends. So Oliver Stone joined our bar crawl and he was blast if I do say so myself. He was buying shots and toasting my birthday and was full of laughs, not at all what I would have expected. His son Sean asked Fred to introduce us, so I also had the pleasure of meeting him as well. Let's just say doesn't look anything like he did in his Wall Street debut.

If you're ever in the mood for an afternoon of Victorian indulgence, visit the Heritage Square Museum in Highland Park, CA. You can walk through a handful of restored Victorian era houses and learn about their history by a costumed docent. Many of the homes available for tour have been completely landscaped and restored with original floors, wall coverings and furniture.
Some of the structures contain "ghost" stories and one in particular has a creepy home doctor's office and operating suite you can browse. It was interesting yet scary, and although I didn't hear any paranormal activity, I did see some chickens roaming around the grounds.

One of the more upscale rooms of the houses. You can definitely see the vast difference between the wealthy and the middle class by their interiors.

Life certainly wasn't easy in those days, demonstrated by the washing machine alone. Such work to wash just one sheet! Anyways, it is a nice spot for an afternoon trip. Check it out if you have the chance!

I watched a really good documentary this weekend called Marathon Boy. It's about a three year old boy, Budhia, from the slums of India who is adopted and trains to be a marathon runner with hopes of going to the Olympics. Budhia trains relentlessly, and says things like "What are you doing here motherfucker? Get out of my way motherfucker!" when he comes across people in his running path. It develops into quite a story, and I think it's a definite must see.

Siameze. He's 30. And he's a singer. He has the look. He has the attitude. He's like, let's do it.

If you missed the debut of Siameze on last night's X Factor, well, frankly you should just kill yourself. It left Paula speechless, but then again that's not saying much.

Since this is a design blog, let's focus on the aesthetics of this beautiful creature for a moment. First of all, Siameze thinks he is straight. He made it a point to say how it is easier to get girls when you are on stage. So there's that. Next, Siameze has silky ironed hair from the heavens that Kim Zolciak would kill for. He cannot help his looks, so stop admiring his Tyra Banks forehead or his sexually attractive Prince persona. Siameze wore a klassy turquoise fishnet shirt with nipple cleavage, TAPS (tight ass pants) with a maja bulge and high heeled boots. He did the splits, a herkie, a knee to boot run and a 360 reverse helicopter with his weave like nobodies business. Siameze is a mystical creature placed on this earth to give us peasants the glimpse of what true perfection really is: the second coming of the love child of Freddie Mercury, Rick James and Verdine White.

I've been wearing a disaster on my head for the past few weeks; decided I need a haircut, right? Past by this spot a couple times but finally walked in yesterday for the first time. First, I was greeted by a legit fella. Then I was offered a beer. I was like, "Whaaat. Am I on that new show 'How To Catch an Alcholic.'" Nah. I wasn't. It was just good folks giving awesome service and hospitality.

Then I got Jerry, my ninja, to work his magic on my hair. The dude is legit. I gave a vague description of what I wanted and this cat knew exactly what I had envisioned. Was super detailed and made sure I looked sexually attractive.

I catch my reflection now and I'm like, "Yo. Who the fuck is this handsome fella looking at me in the mirror son?!"

Overall: great staff, awesome service, legit interior decor and free beer - pfft, who the fuck says no to free booze?

Let me set the scene for you. I go to sushi with my friends Erin and Artem at some dive on Santa Monica Boulevard. Brendan, coming from the Equality Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel, meets up with us in full on black tie. We decide to go to The Abby, so we all pile in Erin's early 90's BMW station wagon, which curiously has a built-in car phone with a cord. This is a photo of a hot mess hanging out the window with a wine glass in hand driving down the boulevard, the cord wrapped around his neck screaming, "SELL EVERYTHING I TELL YOU!" And this was just the beginning....Gotta love West Hollywood.

I asked my landlord to re-tile the shower stall of my bathroom in 2009 as the grout had rotted away over the years and the cove skirting had come loose, creating an opening in the wall. Finally, she sent someone two weeks ago to do the job. They said it would take 3-4 days. Yesterday was day 13, and last night they left and told us it was "finished". Here is what they left us with:

A broken glass shelf. I don't even know how they broke this, it tilts up? WTF? Oh, and tons of filth.

I did mention that my bathroom looked 1000x better before this, and was actually quite clean, right?

Another year older, but definitely better! My best present by far was waking up to my husband giving me a kiss this morning, but I must say I am really looking forward to the delivery of my new Borghese Lingerie Chest! I plan on using it to house my vast collection of jewelry and such, so it is definitely going to be put to good use. I also treated myself to a month's membership at FBE Spa here in Los Angeles. I have heard so many good things about them, especially the infrared sauna with jade stones and power plate vibration machines! I can't wait to get started this weekend. YAY!

LA Mart Designer Appreciation Awards

I was humbly invited to attend the 10th Anniversary Los Angeles Mart Designer Appreciation Awards last Thursday, November 4th. Me and some of my fellow students enjoyed a lovely evening of cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as three of the Mart's standout designers were honored. It was a great night!

I was hanging with the big dogs along amongst all the ASID Student Chapter Members. So nice of them to let me tag along!

The lobby was a perfect place for a low-key awards presentation.

I was my friend Jamie's T.A. many moons ago. Some of the best things to come out of my program include new friends. Plus she is shorter than me, so I tend to let her hang around and make me look tall.

I loved this window display at Two's Company in the lobby. A saddle and some riding boots really makes it feel like fall.

You know I love me some faux trophy heads.

I caught this picture of two of the three designers honored that night posing with their award. It was really beautiful, reminded me of a Baccart sculpture. Congrats ladies!

This is my new bestie Steve Martin. He's the Arc-ID Program Representative and he does a GREAT job with all us students.

At the end of the night we snapped a group shot. It was such a fun night!

The Comforts Of The Friendly Skies In A Hospital?

It's not everyday you'll see the words comfort and airline in the same sentence. And add in the word hospital and nothing seems right! But if you let your guard down, what London based designer Paul Priestman of Priestmangoode has come up with is a streamlined idea to lower costs of healthcare and provide more efficient service. The rendering above is the proposed Preistmangoode hospital bed which would be staggered in rows divided by low walls in what they describe as "Recovery Lounge Pods", where patients could rest after basic procedures. Each bed contains a reclining chair, magazine rack and pull out tv with On_Demand movie access. The logic of hospital staff being able to tend to patients easier like airline attendants tend to passengers allows for more beds in less space and less staff for more patients, however the trade off becomes privacy. Will hospitals start to privatize to those who can afford the luxury of their own room in times of illness?

Although the concept is a good one, I'm not sure I would want to be within such close quarters with other ailing folks. I mean, it's always my luck to sit within 3 feet of a screaming baby, who's to say that luck wouldn't carry over to my Recovery Lounge Pod? You can't exactly complain about those kinds of things without people looking at you like you just you just kicked a puppy. This idea is not without merit, especially in overpopulated countries where healthcare is an issue and there are shortages of doctors and staff. But I'd like to see an adults only airline (aka no screaming babies, no kids under 18) airline before this community rec-center like hospital. I swear, I would pay extra. Thoughts?

Olympic Tower 2016 Rio de Janeiro

I know these photos have been circulating for awhile, but they really are magnificent.

These renderings are of the proposed 2016 Olympic Games Tower to be constructed on Cotonduba Island in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Designed by Zurique, it uses solar panels to pump sea water to create the waterfall effect, visible by land, sea and even from the air.

Irish Traveller Update

Well, let's face it. It has been awhile since I have featured some stunning imagery of our beloved Irish Travellers. Good Ole' Jane was kind enough to forward these First Communion photos from Mervue (Galway) Church some time ago and I have been holding out on you all until now. It looks as if our special little lady is the one in the center.

I guess each young lady gets her own church pew according to dress size.

The mini-top hats remind me of my ringmaster's uniform from Halloween a couple of years ago. Perhaps I am a trend-setter amongst the Traveller community. What an honor.

So last night was the season opener for my alma mater Virginia Tech Hokies, and it was a let down. Ranked #10, we went up against #3 Boise State Univ., which consisted mostly of recruits from California. WTF? The game was a good one, but too much of a roller-coaster. Anyways, our team used to look like this....

And we came out all kinds of hard looking like this.....I was like dayum!

But then I started thinking, where did the inspiration for these new uniforms come from? When it comes down to it we really looked like this.....

And in the end we lost to a bunch of horsey Potato farmers....

Lost on Labor Day

While all of you were celebrating Labor Day at the beach and grilling up burgers and dogs, I was at the gym working on my fitness. While it isn't rare to see random celebs in my little neighborhood gym, I felt there was some strange Dharma Initiative going on as I saw both Hurley, aka Jorge Garcia:

And everyone's favorite Hobbit, Charlie, aka Dominic Monaghan. I'm not a big Lost watcher, caught it a few times and even tuned in for a season or two but it fell to the wayside after awhile. But did you know that Charlie's last name on the show was Pace? So if Lost were real, which some people think it was, he would be related to me. Although he doesn't look very Italian.

The Boss' Daughter

The September issue of Traditional Home features a lovely little spread on my boss' daughter's 1850's Boerum, Brooklyn brownstone. Former Manhattanites Adam and Suzanne (honestly, two of the nicest people you could ever meet) and their two little cuties Henry and Teddy have really transformed this classic house into a cozy home. Photos by Johnny Valiant.

I remember the process of them purchasing this house not too long ago, they went through a lot with the crazy market but it seems to have all paid off. Minor changes in architecture and interiors and such were made with the help of Suzanne's dad and some folks in our firm. Suzanne's parents are native Virginians (LOVE her mother, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE) so a lot of the furnishings were handed down family heirlooms which add such a nice touch. And it seems as though they have a lot of natural light, you really can't ask for more than that in New York, right? That and a yard, which they also have. Score!

This Eileen Gray desk and chair was picked up at a Paris flea market, something Adam has a made a hobby of perusing. Suzanne is the one with the affinity for wallpaper.

Suzanne wanted the kitchen to reflect the colors of the inside of a Faberge Egg. The cobalt blue and subway tile compliment each other so nicely.

They kept the original marble fireplace and added more flea market finds such as the tripod lamp in the back right corner. I just love those, so classic. Built in bookcases and grass cloth covered walls add warmth to this multi-purpose den/office/guest room.

Suzanne's pick of Cole and Son Art Nouveau wallpaper gives a glimpse into the master bedroom accompanied by a vintage Eames chair.

The top floor of the house is host to the boys' rooms and a play room which is decked out in colorful rugs and built-ins packed with books and toys.

Congrats Adam and Suzanne, you've done a great job! Enjoy your beautiful home!

World's Hottest Dance Off

I don't have any idea how old this is, but I just saw it over on MFAMB. She had the caption, "Tell me again why drugs are bad?" underneath. These guys were in their own little world, just dancing like no one is looking. Dancing like frat boys aren't walking by trying to steal their shine. Dancing like you could give a shit that someone in a bandanna and a Kiss shirt is rocking out to electronica. I seriously cannot stop watching this shit. Clearly, homeboy in the jeans is the winner. Although, I am not sure to qualify him as a solo dancer or as a couple with the ground. And really the other guy has some kind of injury with his knee, so is this really a fair fight? It's a tough call. Yet what I see here are two amazing humans that clearly belong on the stage somewhere. I'm not sure where, but somewhere. And let me just go ahead and apologize for posting this, because you will feel completely more stupid for watching it. So sorry. And you're welcome.

Hôtel de Sévigné

On your next trip to the Champs-Elysées, you may want to check out the newly renovated Hôtel de Sévigné, a two mintue walk from the famed avenue. The 30 room hotel is aptly named after French Aristocrat and 17th century "A-Lister" Marquise de Sévigné. Sévigné wrote over 1000 letters during the course of her 70 years, mostly to her daughter, which were later published in volumes by her granddaughter in 1725. Her writing style contained a modern day wit as she chronicled daily life and exposed scandal and clandestine affairs of the royal court of Louis XIV. Renovations were completed by Paris-based interior architects Didier and Fabrice Knoll. The quaint hotel is equidistant from the Eiffel Tower and Arch de Triumph.

Infrastructure improvements left a small budget for the interior architects to work with, but they managed to keep the elegance and flair of the society gal.

Nothing says French like embroidered fresh linens.

Furnishings were kept on the small side and patterns in the carpet and draperies add interest to the boutique style rooms.

Natural light from the small balcony gives this room a great view of the street and some exquisite French architecture.

Can you imagine a better place to eat breakfast?

Didier and Fabrice Knoll used the color lavender as a reference to Madame de Sévigné’s roots in Provence. The guest toiletries give an old world feel of a French apothecary.

Dontcha just love the size of a European bathroom? I guess you can't have it all.

Hotel walls and corridors display some of the writings of Sévigné. Such a lovely tribute to a woman ahead of her time!
